sx’s are much more intense with gout than rheumatoid…gout also consists of severe redness & shininess to the skin around the joint…also responds to gout meds when rheumatoid doesn’t…gout is extremely common in the great toe…once you’ve seen it or have had it, you’ll know exactly what the difference is…

Basically, Gout is caused by increased levels of urine acid in the blood which crystallized and deposited in joints, tendons and other tissues. It usually affects the big toe but other joints can be involved. There are thought to be two main causes of gout, there seems to be some sort of genetic link. Not everyone with a family history of gout with get it. The other is lifestyle, diet has been linked to gout more so than many other conditions. There’s a strong link between foods such as alcohol, sugary drinks, meat and seafood and the development of gout. Gout usually affects men over 30 and woman over 50 and particularly those of American American or Pacific decent.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a dysfunction of the immune system, as it is an autoimmune disease. This means that the immune system believes that it’s own tissue is a foreign body and begins to attack it. Any joint can be affects, but usually the hands, feet and wrists. Because it’s an autoimmune disease, it is seen more commonly in individuals with a family history of other autoimmune diseases (i.e. Celiac Disease, Hashimoto’s, Crohn’s Disease). There also seems to be an environmental trigger that sets off the immune system. In many cases this is never identified. Usually treatment involves slowing down the disease by suppressing the immune system. It usually affects woman between the ages of 20-50, but can affect children and men.

They do have many of the same symptoms, but the pathology behind the conditions is very different.

They are related but they affect different people and have different causes, though the symptoms may be similar. Gout usually affects middle aged men who are overweight. It is heavily influenced by diet because it is caused by high levels of uric acid in the body. RA is caused when the immune system attacks healthy cells. It can affect people who are younger and it is more common in women.
